UPS add 10 alternative fuel vans to fleet ahead of Olympics

The courier firm, UPS, is to add 10 dual-fuel vans to its fleet ahead of the Olympic Games in London. The biomethane/diesel vehicles are just a handful of the 2,500 alternatively-fuelled vehicles the firm currently runs.
The new vehicles will be used for delivering to Olympic venues and there are also five Modec electric vehicles already operating out of key London facilities.

Cindy Miller, the managing director of UPS UK, Ireland and Nordics, said:

“At UPS, sustainability is more than a practice, it's a value. As an official sponsor of London 2012, we are responsible for London 2012 deliveries and are working closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to help realise the goal of delivering the most sustainable Games possible.”

Miller went on to say that the biomethane vehicles constituted exploration of alternative fuel technology and that using them for the Olympics would help the firm find the best solutions long-term.

Biomethane is produced from organic waste and is therefore renewable, reducing the need for fossil fuels. It can be acquired from landfill or via an anaerobic digester which breaks down organic waste.
