How will UPS ensure everything is ready for the Olympics?

UPS are the official logistics partner for the London Olympics, but this doesn’t just mean that they are in business for a few weeks over the summer. It has been a three-year effort.
This may seem surprising, but it is thought that the task could be the biggest civilian logistics initiative in history. Even minor elements of the Games demand huge shipments. 26,400 tennis balls will be used and 4,283 table tennis balls. In all, 30 million items will be moved from various starting points to one of 172 different Olympic venues. This compares to 18 or 19 million items for the Beijing Olympics. There are two dedicated London warehouses, which together provide 850,000 square feet of space.

Of course, a large proportion of the items brought in will also need to be returned afterwards. The Paralympics finishes in early September and that is when that process will begin. UPS say that there is a three-month window for doing this, so in many ways it is even more of a task than getting things in place in the first place.
