DHL aims for growth in India

Deutsche Post AG, which controls DHL, is looking to invest 300m euros in a bid to control the Indian market. However, chief executive Frank Appel did not put a timeframe on this, saying that volatility was the only thing that was predictable.

“There is an opportunity to offer additional capacity for the air fleet networks. We see huge opportunities for multi-customer warehouses. We also see opportunities for new competent centres where we have expertise for certain industries.”
Appel considers India of the firm’s key regions at present, along with Brazil, China, Mexico and Russia. While it plans on presenting many of its services under the DHL name, it will retain Blue Dart, the domestic courier company in which it holds an 81 per cent stake.

Competence centres are planned in a number of industries – automotive, life sciences, healthcare and retail. There will also be products developed in line with its free trade zone in Chennai.

In 2009, Appel presented ‘Strategy 2015’ which foresaw a two-tier system with a focus on small parcels and freight forwarding. He remains optimistic that the Indian market will grow rapidly, creating opportunities.
