Specifying delivery times for urgent shipments

If you don’t ship goods regularly, you might think that the earlier a package is collected, the sooner it will arrive at its destination, but this isn’t the case. A package dispatched early in the day stands no greater chance of arriving early the next day than one sent out at 5pm.
This is because all packages only return to the depot when the driver finishes their shift. They will then make the onward journey to the relevant delivery depot together. From there, they will be sorted and put onto vans for a delivery and again, there is no guarantee that one package will be delivered sooner than another. It entirely depends on the driver’s route.

The only way of ensuring a package is delivered earlier in the day is to pay more for some sort of timed delivery. Different couriers have different delivery options, but there is usually an option to request a morning delivery or one before a certain hour. If a driver has such a package to deliver, they will alter their route to accommodate it – this is why it costs more. Otherwise, packages will be delivered according to the most logical route for the day.
